Name:
Pauline Robinson
My role:
Faculty Rep for Business and Law
About me:
I am a mature 49 years old, live in a small town called Elland, near Halifax in West Yorkshire. I have been appointed as the new Faculty Representative for Business combined with Law and I am looking forward to working with you all, to make student life better and to get to know all fellow students and lecturers throughout the upcoming academic year of 2023.
I live in a large three-bedroom semi-detached house with my 18-year-old son (my dad lives next door). We are a close-knit family and we get on so well. I have seven cats and they are my fur babies and study buddies. My daughter Gemma lives with her boyfriend and they have two children together, Shane, 3 and Madison, 3 months old.
I am not currently working and studying has become a part of my life.
I do have a spare bedroom in my property to do all my study work with a desk and office chair, but I still prefer to study in my bedroom as this is personal choice where I do feel comfortable. I am willing to learn in all aspects of study and getting to know all the Students Association Student Leadership Team.
My role:
I will assist students with any feedback through my role as Faculty of Business and Law to make student life better within The Open University and the community. I will make sure that all student voices are heard and see what we can do to improve the services at the OU Students Association. Any feedback whether small are big is welcome and I will do my best to solve issues for students and give appropriate information on what I can do to make life better for students in my faculty.
As a Faculty Representative for Business and Law, I will do my utmost to sort out any problems that may arise in the foreseeable future. I will keep track of everything I do and take feedback and views seriously. Also, I will make sure students can ask questions that they may have and I can pass on the relevant information to the OU Students Association team.
What I have been up to and what I am currently working on?
I have done various online activities and taken part in Open Learn courses and gained several badges. One is 'Being an OU student'. These are still recognised short course qualifications as well as the degree. I do recommend students to take part in these as they will give you confidence and motivation.
I have been working on B206 (Understanding Customers) now and taking part in the activities that come with the module. I am thoroughly enjoying it so far and I have posted an introduction to the two modules I am currently working on. I will post some more when I get the chance.
What I am studying?
I am currently studying two modules, 60 credits each per module. They are B206 – Understanding Customers and B207 – Shaping Business Opportunities. My degree Qualification is Business Management Stage 2. I was at Huddersfield University for a short time and transferred my remaining credits to the OU as I prefer the convenience of studying at home so I have more time on my hands. I was also a representative at Huddersfield University for a year and I set up my own charity event which was 'the price is right’ game. The object of the game was for students to guess the price of products from a well-known supermarket (20 in total). They individually had a sheet of paper with the questions on and I had the answer sheet. Then I marked down who got the most correct answers and I then emailed the student who won. The prize was a £20 gift voucher from Amazon donated by the Student Union Team. I really loved getting involved and something I can do for the Association is set up several charity events as part of my faculty role in Business and Law.
What I am doing when I am not studying:
In my spare time when I am not studying, I like to spend time with my partner, my grown-up children and my immediate family. Only a handful of my family like to socialise and I love karaoke. It is good to let my hair down to enjoy myself and live life to the full. I do have my own karaoke machine and when I do have parties in the comfort of my own home, I obviously bring the machine and my Bluetooth machine. I have flashing disco lights to make my parties more memorable when I am not studying. It is very entertaining.
As a faculty Representative for the Business and Law, I will do my utmost to sort out any problems that may arise, to keep track of everything and to take people’s views and feedback seriously. Also, to make sure students can ask any questions that they may have and I can pass on the relevant information to the department in the OU Students Association.
